AYASE YUKIYA
Ayase Yukiya NAME None NICKNAMES 01/02 BIRTHDAY Male/Single/Bisexual DATING
Okane ga Nai CANON Tokyo HOMETOWN Shinjuku, Tokyo CURRENT LOCATION Alive STATUS
HISTORY
Ayase's history doesn't have anything particularly triggering, but when I get to the synopsis of the story, it will be one big trigger warning. A full, detailed writeup can be found here.

MEDICAL
Ayase doesn't have any long-term illnesses, but there are several comments about his frail health, which heat seems to aggravate. That said, we don't see him sick very often. Furthermore, though we don't see it often outside of the start of the series, we're told he's prone to fevers.

PERSONALITY
TDLR; painfully shy, quiet, loving, optimistic, lonely

Meek and mild, Ayase has always had difficulty connecting with other people. In spite of wanting to express his feelings and interact with everyone, it doesn't come naturally to him. Instead, he often expresses his caring nature through offers of help and encouragement when he can voice it. Often, even simple phrases such as 'I'd like to go, too' are too much, and he ends up staying silent. This creates real loneliness inside of him that persists even into college when he's seen to have some level of friendship with a few others. It also means that when he does receive even the smallest hint of kindness, he'll cherish it and make even the tiniest action into meaning much more. Ayase keeps a lot of mementos as well, refusing to part with things from his childhood as they're precious to him.

In spite of his inability to socialize, he is a very kind, caring individual. Always the first to offer a hand to help, Ayase is quick to offer gifts to the homeless on the street, help a lady cross the road, or protect a small animal. Perhaps the only time he's capable of overcoming his crippling shyness is when someone is need, no matter how small the need may be. When someone is hurt, Ayase is hurt. When someone is happy, Ayase is happy.

Part of his kindness is an ability to see the goodness in others. In his mind, everyone has someone who loves them which makes them worthy of love. It allows him to be quick to forgive, even in the worst kind of situations. While this does result in instinctive trust, but it won't be unconditional even if very little is required to maintain it. He wants everyone around him to be worthy of trust, but if you hurt him, he'll be afraid. Invite him into a dark alley with a knife in your hand? He's sure there's a reason. Stab him? He's not going to want to be around you very much longer. That said, stab him and show remorse? Maybe he'll still be afraid of you, but he'll be easier to approach a second time.

In fact, some of the most satisfying moments are when he does fight back against others. It's never for himself, but we see him stand up to people who are hurting others. While Ayase isn't physically intimidating, that doesn't stop him from trying to stand up to people who are bigger when they're bullying his friends. Likewise, he'll try to be a bit smart about it sometimes, such as driving a car into the middle of a tense situation that was threatening the safety of someone he cares for. Sometimes, Ayase'll just jump in and hopes it works out.

The inherent want to trust does create problems and not only in a 'too pure for this world' kind of way. While there are the obvious consequences of needing to be saved because of his naivety, it can become a problem for others in another way. For example, he can often underestimate someone's bad situation. Kanou's father's abuse is on such a grand and ridiculous scale that it's played for laughs even while used to explain his behavior. Because said circumstances aren't spelled out for him, Ayase always imagines the situations described with an overly positive light, causing him to miss the pain that's actually behind the memory. Should he realize, he'd be horrified, but if it's ambiguous, Ayase assumes the more positive spin. That said, he's not so idiotic that he'd miss more obvious clues.

Because of losing his parents at a young age and then living with an aunt and uncle who saw him as nothing but a burden, Ayase assumes others see him the same way if he asks for anything or infringes on someone else. Preferring to keep things to himself, he isn't one to complain very easily, wanting to fix things himself instead of burdening someone else. Likely due to this, he's come to believe in the value of hard work. Instead of doing things the easiest way, he's happy to take the extra mile for a better result and does all of his own housework, keeps a job, and goes to college.

That isn't to say Ayase has always been perfect in his tolerance of others. At the beginning of the story, he's actually so traditional as to have a very closed mind. He can't understand Kanou's attraction to him because they're both men, and he finds that aspect harder to adjust to than the more problematic aspects. However, this isn't just because he's initially only attracted to women but because of the idea itself. Likewise, the idea of men crossdressing was very confusing to him. However, it's something born of ignorance more than hatred, and he's always been kind but without a real understanding. As the story continues and Ayase has more exposure to people of different tastes, preferences, and such, his mind begins to open, and he becomes one of their strongest defenders.

APPEARANCE
Ayase is unusually small at a self-proclaimed 5'2 (he's likely actually closer to 5'), and very thin, weighing only 101 pounds. His hair is a golden blond and frames his neck and face with long tendrils. Ayase's eyes are especially large and blue in color.

He favors clothing that tends to be white and blue, oversized, and some odd bits of fabric in places.

I'll include some canon reference images. Clicking on a picture will take you to a larger version.

ABILITIES
ABILITY Housekeeping/Crafts

Though his apartment is small, Ayase takes great pride in caring for it. It's clean but it's also inviting, showing signs of someone who sees a home as a special place, one worth care. Small steps include growing his own garden food, cooking his own meals, air drying his sheets for the fresh scent, and other actions that could be more efficient if done more quickly but without the same warm result. His sandwiches look very cute.

He's also very good at making cranes and is likely good at other small crafts as it fits in with his skillset.

Gambling?

While this isn't a skill per se, Ayase has very good luck when it comes to gambling. It isn't that he's good but his luck shines through in this one particular area.

Weaknesses : Technology (he's very bad at computers, cell phones, and other tech-related equipment; emotions (Ayase doesn't want to hurt someone's feelings and will do his best to refrain unless they're being pretty terrible); anything physical (he's a tiny string bean), heat and other conditions which might make him sick;

PERMISSIONS
ooc backtagging fourth-walling threading jacking ? kidnapping injury killing ? physical contact

MISCELLANEOUS
Family: tbc

His shoe size is 24.5 cm, and he's blood type B.

Ayase is mixed race which is why he's a natural blond while also being Japanese.

He works at Rose and Geometry.

A few things to contradict his appearance: he loves the idea of bad boy clothing and often imagines himself wearing more daring clothes. Ayase also loves alcohol and loses a lot of his inhibitions when drunk.

In addition to Japanese, he's also quite skilled in Chinese

Ayase is very superstitious. One belief he holds is that you can die from hiccuping, particularly if you hiccup 100 times. An odd cure his grandma taught him for stopping the hiccups is to bend over with a glass of water and drink from the side of the glass opposite of you. It's as awkward as it sounds.

Thanks to a certain someone, his left ear is pierced.

In a side story, he notices Kanou chewing in his sleep and realizes he's dreaming. In a moment of cuteness, he whispers different foods into Kanou's ear and giggles as he seems to enjoy it. In the end, he accidentally mentions cake, forgetting that Kanou doesn't enjoy sweets.

Ayase works at Rose and Geometry, a transvestite restaurant.

This is what happens when you ask Ayase to sext.

His stats are quite rude.

A layout of Kanou's apartment can be found here

There's no official layout of Ayase's old apartment, but pics can be found here, here, and here. There's also presumably a bathroom.

WARNINGS
Dark content. Click to expand

SEXUAL ABUSE/SEXUAL SLAVERY/HUMAN TRAFFICKING - Ayase is bought for this reason. While the series does occasionally show how hard it is, it's also sadly 'rape turns into love' so it's not handled with the full gravity it deserves. However, Ayase himself does suffer for this and wants out of the 'deal' very much.

This is also a huge theme from third parties as well. Ayase made it to 18 just fine and now can't escape it, it seems.

☆ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS- In addition to the above warnings, Kanou stalks Ayase, controls his every move, and doesn't hesitate to use force in order to make him obey.

HOMOPHOBIA/BIOGITRY - In addition to Kanou's rough ideas about crossdressing and homosexual relationships (his hypocrisy is pointed out), Ayase originally has very old fashioned ideas about relationships as well. Though he doesn't hate anyone for their choices, he doesn't understand it at first. As he spends time with people outside of the narrow world view, he accepts different lifestyles and begins to support them. I normally take him after this point.

If you wish to opt-out of interactions with Ayase, please comment here. If you want to leave a note, please feel free, but an explanation isn't required. For those interested in tagging with him but would prefer to avoid the topics discussed above, I can certainly work around them.

Okane ga Nai was big in the yaoi scene once upon a time but some people avoid it for obvious reasons or just haven't heard of it. I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a place where other players can ask questions, either be it about canon or my interpretation. Please note, this is not a HMD. If you want to drop a note about my portrayal of Ayase, feel free to drop by here. I'll be happy to hear from you.

If you have a question, feel free to leave a comment below, and I'll answer it. Anon is on, screening won't be. Due to the disturbing nature of his canon, I'll have some questions hidden below a trigger warning label. If you're unsure what the triggers may be about, you can find more information here. Also, as a general note, you're free to ask about other characters if you want, but I can only assume so much about their motives, etc, and anyone who plays them may have a different take. With all of those disclaimers out of the way, let's get started.

⊙ He's from a yaoi manga. Does he really like girls?

He does. He isn't the manliest of men, but he really does like the ladies.

⊙ So how about men?

There are a few ways to interpret the story. At the start of canon, Ayase finds it weird that men might want other men. However, as time progresses, and he has the opportunity to grow closer with more and more people, his mind opens. I believe inexperience made him ignorant and when his world expands, so do his views. I believe with the proper exposure beforehand, Ayase's love is large enough that he wouldn't have cared about gender. So, if taken from the proper canon point, I believe this doesn't have to be a single-target sexuality shift.

Admittedly, there's a darker take, which I'll explain below under the cut.

Possible triggers below here

⊙ You don't think it's Stockholm Syndrome making him think he loves his rapist?

Oh, there's definite Stockholm Syndrome + Ayase being too nice. I don't take the story as a romance at all. It's a very plausible interpretation that he believes he falls in love with his rapist because of this and that he doesn't actually want to be with men at all. It's certainly canon in the beginning. That said, for the reasons stated above, I don't think it's necessarily the case that he couldn't fall for another man.

⊙ How is the darker content handled?

Not respectfully at all. They do a decent job of showing Ayase's trauma to it all. He's sincerely hurt by everything that happens, and he's terrified of his rapist. They acknowledge that Kanou shouldn't rape Ayase and his response is to try and be a little nicer when not raping him. The rape scenes themselves are graphic and are definitely framed in an erotic context. Those who have a hard time with this subject matter should absolutely not read this manga.
